“Our Musical World” Receives 2009 Independent Publisher's Silver Medal
Three of Ixtlan’s artists provided their artistic mastery and depth of knowledge to an award-winning college text, “Our Musical World: Creative Insights into a Planet's Cultural Diversity.” The text uses contributions from the world’s creative artists to discuss ethnomusicology. Kevin Locke, Harmonia, and Inca Son’s works (along with other artists) supplied the authors with new methods of combining the "arts" into a generalized instruction of global perceptions and life-skills, particularly relevant to healing cultural misrepresentations and imbalances in the curriculum. Kevin Locke, Harmonia, and Inca Son shared viewpoints and insights into their respective music genres and the growing fusion of music in a global world. They also opened their musical catalogue to the authors, and now over 600 students per semester are exposed to their compositions as a central aspect of their curriculum.

Out of 4,000 entries, "Our Musical World " received the 2009 Independent Publisher's Silver Medal in the Academic category. This represents the first time a music and cultural text has been so awarded. The text also received recognition from LAND (Liberal Arts Network for Development) in "Outstanding Innovation" for demonstrating exemplary collaboration and teamwork.

Hear the music the text is based on:
Kevin Locke – Midnight Strong Heart
Harmonia – Melodies from Bukovina
Inca Son – Pueblo Andino

Beppe Gambetta Spotlight Showcase in Review
Last Tuesday, Beppe Gambetta showcased at the International Performing Arts for Youth conference in Pittsburgh. The feedback from presenters alone merited an encore. With vocals and audience engagement, Beppe’s showcase demonstrated the various musical landscapes experienced by a citizen of the world. He has journeyed through Europe and the Americas, learning the heart of Italian folk and American roots music. The fusion of both characterizes his style.

Thanks to everyone who dropped by to watch Beppe’s showcase. For our colleagues at IPAY and anyone who wants to learn more, here is a link to Beppe’s online brochure.

About Ixtlan Artists Group
For more than twenty years, Ixtlan Artists Group has represented virtuoso performers from Europe and the Americas who have a commitment to education and cultural diversity. Founded in 1986 under the name “Joan Sherman Artist Management,” the agency’s original mission of providing excellent folk artists has expanded to traditional world music artists who provide concert and educational experiences that open doorways to universal cultural understanding.

Each artist Ixtlan represents is a premiere talent in their idiom, and they take audiences beyond daily experience into the arena of performance virtuosity rich in cultural traditions. Ixtlan artists speak directly, not only to performance, but to making an impact, on and off the stage.

Through both stage performance and educational outreach, Ixtlan endeavors to provide a venue where performance is used as a bridge to cultural understanding, artistic awareness, educational involvement, and peaceful coexistence of shared ideas.

Ixtlan periodically publishes a digest of the latest news about the artists on its roster.
